Title Social mechanisms of trust
Description Taught by Prof. Dr. Diego Gambetta and Prof. Dr. Wojtek Przepiorka

Social trust is a necessary ingredient in modern societies, where mutually beneficial social and economic exchanges between strangers take place at scale. Why can we trust strangers most of the time in some societies but not in others? Why are some people within a society more trusting than others? What bearing do formal institutions or catastrophic events have on social trust? How is trust established in environments where betrayal is the rule rather than the exception?
Diego Gambetta is a distinguished British-Italian Sociologists, who has dedicated parts of his academic life to addressing these and related questions. In this master-level seminar, students will engage with his and like-minded scholars’ writings to apprehend a seemingly ungraspable concept.
The seminar is organized as a one-week block-seminar taking place in the first week of the semester. Students are expected to prepare for the seminar by reading the compulsory readings before the start of the seminar and attend and actively participate in all meetings of the seminar. Students who want to attend this seminar should block their schedules from Monday, September 15 till Friday, September 19. A detailed syllabus including a schedule, a list of compulsory preparatory readings, and descriptions of graded assignments will be provided in ILIAS in due time before the start of the semester.
