GHS/GCB Non-invasive brain stimulation and advanced neuroimaging |
| Description |
Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) methods have been widely used in basic neuroscience to study causal mechanisms of cognitive processes and to improve impaired neural systems in neurological and psychiatric disorders. The aim of this course is to provide students with foundational knowledge of electric stimulation methods (tES: tDCS, tACS, tRNS), magnetic stimulation (TMS), and emerging techniques such as transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS).
On Day 1, an overview of NIBS will be provided and the students will gain an understanding of the neurophysiological bases of NIBS effects as well as details of TMS, tES, and tFUS. Emerging techniques such as personalized stimulation protocols and tFUS-based drug delivery will be discussed and safety and ethical issues will be addressed. Practical knowledge will be conveyed through a hands-on session, in which participants will have the opportunity to experience TMS and tDCS.
On Day 2 combined NIBS–neuroimaging approaches (e.g., fMRI, MRS, EEG-fMRI) as well as emerging neuroimaging methods relevant for NIBS research such as laminar functional MR will be presented. Clinical and translational applications will be covered with a focus on stroke, major depression, and schizophrenia. Finally, students will engage in short literature presentations (10–15 minutes) followed by critical group discussions on each presentation, enabling them to connect NIBS concepts with current research. |
