Title Sozietät for Systematic Theology and Philosophy of Religion: Currently Relevant Texts
Description The Sozietät for Systematic Theology and Philosophy of Religion has always seen itself as a place where texts of contemporary relevance can be discussed. In the Fall Semester 2025, we wish to emphasize this aspect by collectively reading texts that strike us as particularly relevant to our times. To ensure this contemporary focus, session topics will be determined progressively during the course - each finalized no later than one month before the respective session.

The first session will examine Peter Thiel. His economic, technological and political influence is considerable. In German-speaking countries, he gained prominence in recent months through numerous articles and particularly through the Deutschlandfunk podcast "The Peter Thiel Story," which was downloaded millions of times (https://open.spotify.com/show/0FQYKcc8UzablAZnd6lueH?si=c9d198a922694a0).

Thiel not only provides valuable insight into a cyberlibertarian mindset shaped by - and simultaneously shaping - Silicon Valley. As a philosophically trained thinker whose work features significant Christian-apocalyptic and political-theological elements (he identifies as Christian and actively promotes Christian politicians like J.D. Vance, who owes his political career to Thiel), he represents a figure that is both fascinating and problematic for our Society.

We will engage with what may be his most ambitious text: "The Straussian Moment" (2007).
