Title Advanced Plant Biology: Chemical Ecology
Description Lecture and practical course.
2nd - 5th week of the semester.
Lecture: Monday 13-15 and Thursday 9-11. Practical course: Thursday 11-17 and Friday 9-17.
Lunch break by arrangement.

Lecture: Plants interact with a wide variety of other organisms both above and below ground through the exchange of various chemical substances. The nature of these interactions—ranging from beneficial organisms to pests—determines plant growth and, ultimately, crop yields and the health effects of our food. The lectures cover such interactions and discuss the most important aspects of chemical ecology, ranging from beneficial organisms to pests and from genes to ecosystems. We will discuss the communication and defense mechanisms available to plants and how pests adapt to these strategies. We will integrate these topics and discuss what this means for agricultural cultivation and human health.

Lab: The lab deepens the lecture topics through a series of experiments. We focus on experiments that push the boundaries of current knowledge and can thus also yield new scientific insights. Students investigate how plants defend themselves against insect pests and how beneficial insects are affected by this. Students learn a wide range of practical methods from chemical ecology, as well as the scientific process from hypothesis formulation to critical evaluation and interpretation of data.
