This course provides an advanced analysis of labor markets with a focus on imperfections, wage determination, and the role of outside options. It begins by documenting key empirical facts that are inconsistent with the neoclassical benchmark and then develops models of imperfect competition, including monopsony and search frictions. These models are used to analyze how wages and employment are determined when firms have market power and workers face mobility frictions. Building on these frameworks, the course examines how outside options shape wage determination and how they can be measured empirically. It then studies the role of institutions, such as unions, as responses to labor market imperfections, and analyzes their effects on wages and efficiency. Throughout the course, theoretical models are connected to empirical evidence and policy-relevant questions.
