Title Tree rings and climate
Description Block Course: 7-9 September 2026. On 7 and 9 September in Bern, on 8 September at the WSL Birmensdorf.

Start: Monday, 7 September 2026, 8.15 h, computer room 101, library, Institute of Plant Sciences, Altenbergrain 21, 3013 Bern

Together with D. Nievergelt and L. Schneider.

In this block course, students will learn how to use tree rings as a natural archive for climate reconstruction. Beginning with a general overview of tree-ring research, including the history of this scientific discipline, tree-ring formation and its biological and environmental drivers, and the different types of basic parameters that can be extracted from tree rings (ring width, density, chemistry, cell properties), we will dive into the methodology of tree-ring data production, statistical analyses and scientific interpretation. This will include selecting appropriate trees in the field, processing wood samples, performing and quality-checking the measurements, detrending methods to separate desired climate signals from undesired information, and the specifics of climate reconstruction. The course will be based on interactive lectures supplemented by demonstrations of lab techniques and hands-on exercises.
The course will be held from eight or more registrations.
