Title Critical thinking in the data-driven age
Description Registration deadline 15 September in KSL. Registration is binding.

Aim: In an age flooded with data, graphics, and ambitious technological claims, this course equips students with essential critical thinking skills to navigate the modern landscape. We are constantly exposed to statistical data and AI-driven information, often accompanied by logical fallacies, biases, and misinterpretations. The rise of ‘big data’ can create a false sense of reliability, even as common errors such as incorrect conclusions from biased sampling and the conflation of correlation and causation persist. Additionally, flexible data visualization tools are frequently misused to support unverified claims. New challenges, such as the uncritical use of generative AI tools, further impact our decision-making, both personally and professionally. This course addresses these issues, helping students build skills to evaluate and respond thoughtfully to data-driven discourse.

Students will engage in discussions, presentations, and readings from contemporary sources. We will follow several themes from the book “Calling Bullshit: The Art of Skepticism in a Data-Driven World” by Carl T. Bergstrom and Jevin D. West.
