Replication and Open Science: Research in Usable Security and Privacy |

This block seminar introduces students to usable security and privacy, an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of psychology, human-computer interaction, and security research. It focuses on how people deal with privacy and security in digital environments and how systems such as passwords, warnings, consent requests, and privacy settings can be designed to be both effective and genuinely usable.
The seminar is research-intensive, but in a hands-on and highly collaborative way: students will not only read about empirical research, but actually carry out a replication study themselves. Working in groups, students will reproduce an existing empirical study in usable security and privacy, from understanding the original research question to preparing materials, running the study, analyzing the data, and presenting the results. This gives students the chance to experience how research works in practice; actively, critically, and as part of a team.
As a block seminar, the course begins with intensive in-class sessions that introduce the topic, provide key input, and prepare the replication projects. After this initial phase, students move into more self-directed group work to set up and conduct their study. The replication will be run within the semester, so students will follow the full process from preparation to results. At the end of the course, the groups come back together to present and discuss their findings in class. The final report on the replication study will be written in English (preferably). |
