Title Psychedelics in psychotherapy: Current evidence for various mental disorders
Description This seminar presents the current evidence base for psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) based on recent scientific literature. Psychedelic substances such as Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), Psilocybin, and 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) are increasingly being researched worldwide and, in Switzerland, may be used in individual or group settings for various mental disorders, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety disorders. Study findings are critically discussed, and both the opportunities and risks of PAP are carefully reflected upon. Historically as well as internationally, Switzerland has played a leading role in this field. However, the potential of innovative psychopharmacological interventions must be considered in light of specific risks, such as substance-induced psychosis or psychological dependence. Public media coverage tends to oscillate between excessive skepticism and naïve hype. Another particular challenge in PAP involves the professional handling of spirituality. Mystical experiences may confirm or call into question individuals’ religious beliefs, placing PAP in a field of tension between esotericism and rationality. These and related topics are critically examined in the seminar and linked to empirical findings.
