Physical Methods in Inorganic Chemistry |
| Description |
The goal of this course is to provide a systematic introduction to the tools available for probing the electronic structures of transition metal and f-block complexes. We will focus on paramagnetic compounds and develop an understanding of what various techniques reveal about electronic structure beyond what structural information alone can provide. After an introduction to ligand-field theory, we will explore the capabilities and limitations of electron paramagnetic resonance, Mössbauer spectroscopy, magnetic circular dichroism, and magnetometry in characterizing the ground and excited states of molecular systems. Emphasis will be placed on the complementarity of these methods and on strategies for designing a multi-technique characterization approach.
