The course is rooted in bridging the gap between fundamental knowledge and large-scale industrial application. The aim is to equip listeners with a comprehensive understanding of the most vital chemicals in the global chemical industry. The course discusses the most important commodities produced in chemical industry: their appearance, production, and utilization. Course splits into two blocks:
- Inorganic chemicals (acids, bases, gases, fertilizers, glass, cement, steel,…)
- Organic chemicals (methane, synthesis gas, olefins, polymers, rubber, medicine,…)
In both blocks the modern pathways of energy-efficient and sustainable production are discussed with focus on thermodynamics and kinetics. Basic elements of material processing and separation such as precipitation, distillation, filtration, drying, packaging are provided. Benefits and opportunities of becoming a professional chemist in chemical industry are explicitly mentioned, with personal experience being discussed.
