This course provides an introduction to labor economics with a focus on understanding how wages and employment are determined in real-world labor markets. It begins with the neoclassical benchmark of perfectly competitive labor markets, where wages are determined by supply and demand. The course then confronts this benchmark with empirical evidence on unemployment and wage dispersion, highlighting key discrepancies between theory and observed labor market outcomes. Building on these facts, the course introduces a sequence of models that incorporate labor market imperfections. These include firm market power (monopsony), search frictions, and wage-setting through bargaining. The course further explores behavioral and informational explanations for wage setting, such as fairness considerations and efficiency wage mechanisms. Finally, it examines the role of institutions, including minimum wages and unions, and their impact on wages and employment. Throughout the course, theoretical concepts are complemented with empirical evidence.
