| Title |
Social Interactions through Digital Media |
| Description |
Most people today communicate via digital media such as Zoom, social media, or virtual reality (VR). Similar to earlier media revolutions, such as the spread of the printing press, these media create new opportunities for social interaction, but also give rise to unexpected and sometimes difficult-to-control individual and societal dynamics. In this seminar, we examine (i) how digital media and their properties (e.g., constant availability, asynchronicity, anonymity) give rise to new communication dynamics, (ii) the extent to which digital media facilitate or hinder social participation, (iii) the effects of digital media on natural interactions in face-to-face contexts, and (iv) how digital media can be used as methodological tools to investigate socio-cognitive processes. |
