Title Epigraphy of the Middle Ages
Description Inscriptions contain important information, in Greek and Roman Antiquity as well as in the Middle Ages. Whereas paleography is the science of letters written with ink on papyrus, parchment, or paper (the relevant writing surfaces of the Middle Ages), epigraphy concentrates on script on attached to all other materials. These material qualities determine forms, functions, and relevance of inscriptions as sources for historical insights. The course offers an introduction to epigraphic scripts in the Middle Ages, and gives opportunity to elaborate the criteria that determine their relevance as historical sources, and to apply and check insights on specific examples of inscriptions.
