| Title |
Climate and Society in History |
| Description |
This course familiarises students with different approaches to investigate climatic influences on past societies. It introduces various methods to study the links between climate and human well-being, livelihoods, and security (among other things) in history. The case studies discussed in the class span from late antiquity to the contemporary era, although the emphasis is on 15th to 19th centuries CE. The course consists of lectures, discussions and exercises. In addition, the students will work on a theme related historical case study and prepare an oral presentation and a written report on it. In this course, the students will learn practical skills 1) how to critically assess the role of climate in historical research and 2) how historical aspects can be addressed adequately in climatological research. The aim of the course is to provide hands-on view on how to explore past climate-society interactions in academic studies. |
