Writing History in the “Age of Extremes”: Currents of Historiography in the “long 20th Century” |
| Description |
The history of the 20th century has also left its mark on the way historians have reflected on the past, tested new methodological approaches, and narrated history. This course introduces the main currents of historical thought, research, and writing in the “long 20th century” and links these developments in historical scholarship to the cycles of crisis in this “age of extremes” (Eric Hobsbawm). Drawing on key texts from the historiographical currents of historicism, the Annales School, Marxist historiography, historical social science, gender history, the history of mentalities and everyday life, the “linguistic turn,” and the “visual turn,” postmodern and postcolonial historiography, we will discuss how the trends in historical research are connected to the broader history of the 20th century. A prerequisite for participation is a willingness to engage in intensive reading. |
