| Title |
Dealing with Natural Disasters in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times |
| Description |
Natural disasters have always significantly affected people's lives, disrupting or even destroying social and economic structures. This study examines how extreme natural events were perceived, interpreted, and managed between approximately 1250 and 1800. The selected case studies will be used to identify continuities and discontinuities, for example in religious and natural history patterns of interpretation, in strategies for sustainable risk minimisation, and in the development of cultures of memorisation. The examples relate to Switzerland, the Alpine region in general, other regions and landscapes in Europe, as well as intercultural comparisons with examples from outside Europe. |
