Title Seminar integral (BA): In the Light of Charity – On the Politics of Care (T, Ä)
Description What structures of care are provided within society? What are the connections between care and charity? Given that ‹giving› and ‹receiving› are deeply rooted cultural practices within a religious context and up to the welfare state, the question is: what are the power dynamics behind these gestures of care?
In this seminar, we will explore questions surrounding charity, the complexities
of giving and receiving, and the contemporary economies of care. Invited guests,
including priests, pastors and charity organisation representatives, as well as people who have experienced charity as recipients, will share their perspectives. The seminar will also focus on how theatre and artistic practices contribute to contemporary economies of care, whether within aesthetic practices or institutional structures. This could include participatory art, which engages with questions of the social (e. g. Jackson 2011; Bishop 2012). These practices will also be embedded within a wider discourse on theatre and performance-making in the neoliberal era (e. g. Fisher 2009; Kunst 2015), as well as current discourses on the aesthetics of care (e. g. Saito 2022) and caring institutions (e. g. Bailer 2024).
The seminar is a collaboration between the Bern University of the Arts HKB and the Institute of Theatre Studies at the University of Bern, combining theoretical work and artistic practice. Students from both institutions will visit different charity organizations and respond to issues raised during the seminar through their own work, which they will present and discuss in class. Together, we will explore the logics of charity in today’s world in the hope that new paths of care may emerge. One outcome is a performance and its critical reflection.
A material folder will be provided at the start of the semester.
