Stress-related Psychopathology: Emergence and Course from Childhood to Young Adulthood |
| Description |
In this seminar, we examine the relationships between social stressors (both chronic and acute) and the onset and progression of mental disorders (e.g., depression, borderline personality disorder, and trauma-related disorders). We explore the underlying mechanisms from a biopsychosocial perspective. The primary focus is on childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood, as these are the developmental periods during which many stress-related disorders first become fully manifest. In greater depth, we discuss transdiagnostic symptom domains (e.g., emotion dysregulation) and the behaviors that are often associated with them (e.g., risk-taking behaviors and self-harm). The seminar integrates perspectives on normative developmental processes (e.g., changes in stress regulation during puberty) with perspectives on therapeutic interventions and expectable trajectories of mental disorders and associated behaviors. |
