Title Individual Differences (lecture)
Description Why do some people perform particularly well on cognitively demanding tasks? What characterizes creative performance? And can emotional intelligence actually be measured in a meaningful way?

The course Differential Psychology focuses on individual differences in central domains of human performance. Particular emphasis is placed on intelligence and the related constructs creativity and emotional intelligence. Both descriptive models (How can individual differences be described and measured?) and explanatory approaches (How can they be explained?) are addressed.

Using intelligence as a primary example, students are introduced to different scientific perspectives: ranging from cognitive psychology and neuroscience to behavioral genetics. The course illustrates how psychological research approaches the question of why people differ in their abilities, and it discusses the opportunities, limitations, and controversies associated with different explanatory approaches.

A particular emphasis is placed on practical insights into research methods. Students are introduced to classical and contemporary methods used in the field, including experimental tasks from intelligence research, EEG recordings and basic data analysis, as well as creativity tests and measures of emotional intelligence. In this way, the course not only conveys theoretical knowledge but also provides an understanding of how differential psychology is conducted in empirical research and offers inspiration for possible application in everyday practice.

The course consists of a lecture and a tutorial component. Lecture content is made available in advance in the form of podcasts. The weekly in-person sessions are used to clarify open questions, deepen selected topics, critically discuss the material, and complement the theoretical content with practical examples. In this way, the course combines flexible, self-directed learning with interactive discussion and application during the in-person sessions.
