Title MA Seminar: Methodical Approaches to Empirical Work (Project Seminar)
Description This seminar is dedicated to the teaching of methodological skills. These are not only discussed theoretically but also deepened through their practical application, in which the participants are supposed to conduct a smaller study with the help of the knowledge acquired in the seminar.
The acquired know-how could then prepare students for linguistic seminar papers or even final theses (in the Bachelor's and Master's programs) and, in addition, create a basis for a potential career in academia by teaching methodological skills necessary for empirical research.
The course is divided into two parts. In the first half of the semester, there will be an introduction to empirical multilingualism research. In addition, the methodological foundations of empirical multilingualism research will be theoretically elaborated. To this aim, we will, on the one hand, look at literature that provides guidance on research methodology. On the other hand, we will read empirical studies and discuss their methods. In addition, we will deal with the process of a study, from identifying the topic to selecting methods in small steps to collecting data and its evaluation, analysis, and presentation.
In the second block, the learned knowledge will be applied. For this purpose, supervised working groups will be formed during the sessions to develop, conduct, and evaluate one's own smaller empirical study based on a concrete question and present it at the end of the seminar.
