Title Methods seminar: R you Ready? Reproducible data preparation and analyses in R [Beginner]
Description Do you feel insecure about analysing data in R or RStudio? Analysing empirical data is a challenge for you? Would you like to refresh your methodological knowledge (especially in relation to R) for your upcoming Master's thesis?
If you answer "yes" to one or more of these questions, this methods seminar is the right place for you. In the seminar "R you Ready? Reproducible data preparation and analysis in R" you will have the opportunity to refresh and practically apply the knowledge you acquired in your Bachelor's degree on data preparation and analysis in R. This will enable you to start the upcoming Master's thesis with greater confidence.

The seminar is designed for students with little or no practical experience with R and deals with the basics of data preparation and analysis in R. Please do not register for this seminar if you have already attended (intermediate/advanced) seminars on data preparation and/or analysis (e.g. with Dr. Hussey) or will attend them in parallel.

Further information on selecting the right R seminar for you can be found on our homepage under “Technical skills track”: https://www.dig.psy.unibe.ch/studium/masterprogramm/index_ger.html

In this face-to-face seminar, you will receive input on data preparation and analysis with R via a structured knowledge transfer and apply this in practical examples. Firstly, we will create a data analysis plan (following open science practices) and familiarise ourselves with the basics of RStudio. Then we will practise important steps of data preparation and inferential statistical data analysis, especially with packages from the "tidyverse". Regular homework will reinforce your knowledge and prepare you for future R-related challenges. Your regular participation and repetition of the content discussed outside the seminar units is crucial for long-term learning success. During the semester, there will be low-threshold offers of help in relation to "R Troubles", for example via an online forum and a consultation hour with a tutor. Students will also be able to give each other feedback by means of peer feedback.

A laptop or similar with RStudio is required to participate in the seminar. Please note that this seminar is primarily about practical data preparation and analysis with R, but not about refreshing basic statistical knowledge.

In the first class, we will conduct an analysis of your needs. Please reflect on the knowledge you acquired in the Bachelor's programme beforehand and consider where you need to catch up in terms of data preparation and analysis with R. You can view the central documents of the Bachelor's programme (e.g. on the statistics lectures) in the Ilias course ‘Masterarbeit Psychologie'.

Please note that this seminar is allocated on a first come first serve basis. In seminar 491329-HS2025-0, the allocation is made to the seminar with higher ECTS. Please do not register for both seminars!

Note: This class can be taken as a methods seminar or as a regular seminar for the master major/minor "Psychology of Digitalisation"
