Title Clinical signs of upper airway disease in patients with Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia in Switzerland
Description Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare genetic multiorgan disease that mainly affects the upper and lower airways and is characterised by genetic and phenotypic variability. So far, most clinical studies have focused on lower airway disease. Upper airway manifestations such as recurrent or chronic sinonasal or ear infections are equally common, more bothersome in daily life, and can lead to serious complications, including chronic rhinosinusitis, olfactory impairment, and hearing loss, which in children often also leads to speech delay. These complications are common but are often underreported by patients as they grow accustomed to these daily symptoms. Of the patients registered in the national PCD registry (CH-PCD), 90% report chronic nasal symptoms, such as constant nasal congestion, runny nose, or reduced sense of smell. More than half also reported ear pain or hearing problems. Symptom severity was found to increase with age, with older patients reporting more frequent nasal symptoms and hyposmia. We now want to investigate further the characteristics of upper airway disease in Swiss patients with PCD through objective clinical examinations. In this master project, the student will contribute to the collection and data entry of the clinical examination reports. Additionally, they will perform analyses to describe the clinical features of upper airway disease in patients with PCD in Switzerland and explore potential risk factors for disease severity recorded in examinations. This will involve 2 months of full-time work. If the student is interested, an MD thesis leading to a publication could be appended, involving a total of 6 months full-time work equivalent. The project is supervised by Myrofora Goutaki (PD, PhD) and Vasiliki Gkatzou (MD).
